I can admit it, sure. I am a magazine junkie. There, I said it.
I love magazines, I love reading them, opening them and flipping through for
the first time, taking the time to read and sometimes re-read articles, even
taking clippings and adding them to my inspiration book (a composition book with
all sorts of things taped and pasted in to it). I read all sorts.
Photography (Photo
Life and
LensWork
are my favorite), Design (Dynamic
Graphics and
HOW
are my 2 must haves in this category), Craft (Somerset
Studio and
Cloth Paper Scissors,
among others) Home (Living
ETC,
Mary Engelbreit's Home
Companion,
Country Living,
Country Home
and
Domino are all most haves).
Well, imagine my delight the other day when venturing into the local book
shop to find not one, but TWO new premier issue magazines!
Blueprint
(a Martha Stewart Living publication) and
Junk Market Style
(which I believe is affiliated with Country Home).
Blueprint
covers all the bases - ideas, fashion, inspiration, beauty, home,
style, design, how-tos, books & movies... they really won me over with a 4 pages
spread/article about paper products, and was pleasantly surprised that a number
of smaller paper lines were mixed in the with big name brands. I do not own a
house yet, but when I do, I have a great resource on how to personalize my house
number, and even a supplemental buying guide about sofas! All in all I was
pleased with this magazine when I was not sure I would be... I mean a little bit
of everything can at times be too much - but I found
Blueprint
to have a nice mix that kept me interested and impressed, not to
mention that the $3.50 price tag made it a bargain.'
I had heard about
Blueprint
and knew what it was when I saw it... but I had no idea about
Junk Market Style
I quickly snapped up my copy before heading the register. Now,
Junk Market Style
does say it is a premier issue, implying that there will be more, but
I was disappointed last summer to come across another new Country Living
magazine that was a premier issue and never had another, County Living
Collecting (I still have it, I thought it was quite good, but I only happened
upon it by chance, it really did not have a firm place on the magazine rack,
which may have had something to do with its downfall).
Junk Market Style
is of course a magazine based around Junk Market and Ki Nassauer and
Sue Whitney, the original Junk Masters. If you enjoyed the book
Decorating Junk Style,
you will love this magazine! Lots of great ideas, articles and pictures.
And for those lucky ducks living in or near LA, there is a whole article about a
weekend junk shopping trip Ki and Sue went on. For those of us not in LA,
there is a great little map with information of flea markets around the country.
They also have 'Make This' badges around items that have directions on how to in
the back of the magazine. Definitely worth the $5.99 cover price, I
recommend that you check it out!
So that is it for now, Magazine Junkie Hope Wallace, signing off!
(Please feel free to share with me your favorite magazines - I can never get
enough!)
